The England and Australian sides journeyed to Hampshire today to play the third match in the series. The match was to be played at the Rose Bowl, as it turned out, under darkening skies. Heavy rain overnight delayed the commencement of play until 1pm when England won the toss and elected to bat. The match was reduced to 28 overs per side with the Australian innings being further reduced to 16 overs due to rain. England had a shaky start to their innings with Heindrich Swanepoel being bowled by Peter Robinson on the first ball of the innings. Worse was to follow when Tim Guttridge was out for 4 with the England score at 13 for 2. The top half of the England Batting order was decimated by a powerful bowling display from Man of the Match Ray Moxly who accounted for both Guttridge and Nathan Foy, eventually taking figures of 3 for 28 off his allotted 6 overs. At the other end Robinson bowled a tight spell for figures of 2 for 14 in 6 overs. England's captain, Adam Benjamin, dug in and shared partnerships of 64 and 50 with Mark Pickup and David Townley respectively to give the England bowlers something to defend. At the end of their allotted 28 overs England had scored 179 for 7. A short tea break was taken and the Australians were sent in to bat under threatening skies. Nejat Haydardedeoglu and Brett Wilson who both displayed a wonderful array of attacking shots dispatching the bowling to all corners of the ground opened the batting. The match was abandoned after 16 overs with Haydardedeoglu not out on 80 and Wilson not out on 49. The Australian score was 170 at this point and victory was declared as the Aussies run rate was notably higher than the English at the same point in their innings. Australia are now 2-1 up in the series and the teams meet again 26th August at Horsham and 28th August at Bradfield College. |
