Worcestershire V Birmingham Sports BBS League Division 1 Friday 18th May 2007 Report by Hassan Khan
Birmingham won the toss and elected to field, thinking they could rattle the students out early and go for one or two drinks down the local.
Birmingham entered the arena excited and top of their game and an early wicket inspired them further, when James Walton was caught by Luke Darnell, bowled by Adrian Snelgrove for 8. However the international, none other than Sam Murray came out and it seemed he was in a destructive mood. He hit the Birmingham bowlers all over the park, he hit 4 sixes in one particular over, this left the Birmingham bowlers dejected and the wind wasn't helping anybody hence the extras bowled. Birmingham never the less chipped away at the other end whenever it was possible. Jack Kirkby and Hassan Khan taking two quick wickets. However the scoring was forever soaring up and a train didn't look possible let alone a drink! The only bowler who looked like troubling Murray was captain fantastic Kurt Butler.
The Birmingham boys tried everything, Khan and Butler even tried the leg side wall for Murray, but it was to no avail. However, Murray's sensational innings of 189 came to an end when Butler bowled a Yorker and he smashed it in to the gleeful hands of Hassan Khan at midwicket. After this essential wicket was taken, the students did not advance much further, still Birmingham were facing a daunting task of chasing 281 in the wind and the Birmingham b1's were dreading it. Some of the outstanding figures included: Butler's 4 for 50 off 7.1 over's, Kirkby's 2 for 40 off 6 over's. Also Darnell, Snellgrove and Khan taking one each.
After losing the captain early on Birmingham were stuttering, however Darnell came to his own and played a calculating inning, where he took the singles and twos when necessarily and smashed it when the bad ball came along. Birmingham lost the wickets of Snelgrove and Acton early on. Kirkby came out and steadied the ship with a cautious 35. Once Darnell was bowled for a phenomenal score of 99 unlucky to miss out on a maiden century and Kirkby run out by the quick thinking Nichole Lindsay. Matthew Ringland and Hassan Khan were sent back to the pavilion early on and the match was on a knife edge once again. However Vic Foulsham played a clever inning of 23 to take Birmingham home by 3 wickets and 10 balls to spare.
