Royals V VIXINS                                                                               Scorecard

Worcestershire Royals V Northamptonshire VIXINS BBS League Division 1

Sunday 11th June 2006

Report by David Gavrilovic

On a hot and sunny day at New College Worcester Northamptonshire VIXINS finally started their BBS league season against the Worcestershire Royals.

The day started with a couple of surprises Sam Murray, Andy Briant and Ben Ochilea were absent for Worcester however former South Wales Dragon David Viner made his Worcestershire debut and last season’s opening batsman Richard Allen also made a surprise return. Northants themselves handed league debuts to 5 players.

After winning the toss Northants inserted their hosts who got off to a promising start reaching 31 for 0 half way through the sixth over before the collapse started. David Gavrilovic had Richard Allen caught behind by Charles Ronayne and then 5 balls later Dave Keeling bowled the other opener Richard Claridge, who ended up as Worcester's top scorer with 8. Alastair Provan and Shah Miah then came on and removed the next 4 wickets claiming two each including David Viner lbw to Provan for a third ball duck.

Northants then gave a number of other bowlers a try and Charles Ronayne and Nick Killen each took a wicket with Dave Keeling taking two more to finish with 8 for 3.

Set just 82 to win Northants sent out Shah Miah and the inexperienced Jagdisch Pata, both were bowled by Richard Claridge after very attacking innings, Jagdisch for 13 and Shah for 36. Nick Killen batted solidly for 6 not out and Alastair Provan bludgeoned 12 not out from the first 5 balls of the ninth over to give Northants an eight wicket win with 27 overs to spare.

A mention should go to Dale Deary and Kelly Thomas for showing some lower order resistance during Worcester's innings and Robin Williams for batting out 15 overs for 6 runs. However the highest scorer in the match was easily the 52 extras bowled by Northants bowled mainly two bounce on a pitch, which has a very unusual bounce.

It's hard to name a man of the match so I'll give it jointly to 5 players: Richard Claridge, Robin Williams, Alastair Provan, Dave Keeling and Shah Miah.

Next Saturday the sides meet again and if nothing else I'll try to narrow the man of the match down a bit in that game.
