Warwickshire Bears V South Wales Dragons BBS Primary Club KO Cup Semi-Final

DRAGONS WIN TRIP TO LORD'S IN CLOSE MATCH IN THE MIDLANDS

Saturday 1st July 2006

Report by Alan Humphries, WCCVI Vice-Captain

A baking hot day in the South Midlands saw the Primary Club Knockout Cup semi-final between the Bears and the Dragons take place with a place at Lords at stake.

Dragons lost the toss and were asked to bat which was followed by some tight Bears bowling restricting the visitors to 29 for 1 off ten overs. However, the arrival of the mercurial Corrigan to the wicket saw the score pushed along at a healthier rate with some all too familiar savage hitting and astute manipulation of the strike although the Bears were still happy with the score at 90 for 2 off 20 overs. The last 10 overs, however, were to be our downfall with more Corrigan fire power, ably assist by Greenhill, far too many extras and a final over that went for 19 runs. Highlight of the innings was Damion’s brutal 80 not out and a quick fire 22 from Howard.

Following the tea interval the Bears set about getting the total and despite the early loss of Foy and Sugg for 4 and 0 respectively, looked to be comfortable on 90 for 2 chasing the 160 runs required but then the collapse began with only one of the remaining batsmen able to get into double figures – some interesting shot selection and tight Welsh bowling saw the hosts slump to 137 all out with batting contributions of note coming from the Powers family with Paul getting 38 and Andy 37. The damage done on the bowling side came from Keryn Seal with 4 for 29 and man of the match Damion Corrigan with 3 for 32 to add to his 80 runs and 1 catch.

Congratulations must go to the Dragons team in reaching a second successive final at Lords following their performance on the day following a batting collapse from the Bears that reminded me of my White Rose days which I hoped was a thing of the past! Dragons showed how a game can be won like this with the right application.

Now our minds turn to the League as the season is far from over!
