WARWICKSHIRE WIN LOCAL DERBY TO ADVANCE TO KNOCKOUT CUP SEMI-FINALS

Saturday 10th June 2006

Report by Alan Humphries

Saturday 10 June 2006 – the hottest day of the year dawned on the South Midlands to witness the first match in the Knockout Cup Quarter-finals and the first match between local rivals Warwickshire and Birmingham Sports. An early start had been agreed to leave the opportunity of watching England’s first game in the World Cup.

Both sides were unable to field a full eleven and following an incorrect call from Birmingham Sport’s Captain Kurt Butler, they were asked to bat by his WCCVI counterpart Gavin Griffiths. WCCVI made a fine start dismissing Kwami Porter for a first ball duck caught Dowling bowled Sugg. Spring runs was tough for the Birmingham team and wickets fell regularly until skipper Butler came to the wicket and started despatching the ball all over the ground but not without giving some chances! Danger man Lee Robshaw was snatched up cheaply and the visitors finished their innings on 86 all out with the pick of the bowling being Griffiths’s 4 for 28. Comedy moment of the day came with Warren Lee’s delivery for a hat trick being the worst I think I’ve ever seen which would have been wide on an adjacent pitch!

I feel I should also mention here the mercurial catching ability of our resident pensioner Paul Powers who has now taken 4 catches in two weeks with a display of concentration and agility that has left his team mates dumbfounded and bewildered! Not to mention awestruck into the bargain! Long may it continue although, if it doesn’t, I’m sure we’ll still be hearing about these four and the Club’s Xmas party!

The Bears faced a total of 87 to win and despite early hope for Birmingham with the dismissal of Griffiths for 0 and Paul Powers for 12, the score was reached in 8.2 overs thanks to a brilliant knock of 54 not out from “Freddy” Powers which included a brutal 28 off 1 Birmingham over which left the visitors reeling.

A semi-final clash is now set up with either London Sports or Dragons on 1 July with the carrot of appearing at Lords a tantalising one step closer.
