Eastern Vipers V Worcestershire Royals BBS League Division 1 Sunday June 18th 2006 Report by Adam Chamley Eastern Vipers welcomed the Worcester Royals on Sunday 18th June for our first match of the season at the Hills Road 6th Form College Ground, Cambridge. That we were able to field a team for this match was largely due to the debuts of two London Sports players Ali and Chetan, and of Stephen Miles. Four late call off/non arrivals meant that Vipers started with just 6 players. It was a relief when experienced red-ball-cricketer Ian Clarkson arrived after a dozen overs, and fortunately for the home team the visitors had only 9 players themselves.
Vipers were put into bat, Chamley and Jeffries opening steadily. The latter was bowled by Rob Williams for 20, allowing Chetan to impose himself on the match with a very accomplished 127, and inspiring Chamley to achieve his first competitive half century, scoring 60 before being caught by Irving off Williams.
Chetan was caught by Murray for 127 to give Williams his third wicket, then Clarkson rattled up a quick 21, before being caught, again by Murray. Vipers declared after 30 overs at 290-4.
After tea the Vipers' field, unsurprisingly with 7 players, had even more vast open spaces than the visitors; however the youthful Worcester side were unable to take advantage of this, with the exception of Sam Murray who top scored with 31. Wickets fell at a steady if unspectacular pace. Worcester stuck to their task and remained calm and disciplined, and the game was played in a sporting manner throughout in sweltering heat. The visitors amassed a creditable 117 all out, a firm wicket producing assertive bowling from all 7 Vipers. Ali claimed 3 wickets. The last Worcester wicket fell with 7 overs to spare giving Vipers a 173 run win and 25 league points.
