Sussex Sharks V Warwickshire Bears BCEW League

Saturday 15th July 2006

by Luke Sugg

Saturday's game was a very well thought game, with both teams under strength in their own ways. Warwickshire with a few star players missing, not to name but Mark Pickup (broken finger) and Paul 'Granddad' Powers (work) were amongst the losses for the bears, that leaving them with just 4 partials. To fill the number, the bears opted to play 6 B1 players including the star guest performance from Dave G. Warks won the toss and elected to bowl. there was some good batting at the top of the sharks innings from Simon Ledwith who scored 52 i think and Andy D-W with 12, before he was caught at cover by Sugg. Enter Miles Northwood who started off slowly, but that proved well, as he batted and got 32 before chipping one back to Sugg off his own bowling. The Warks fielders were getting tired with B1's as keepers and the partials trying to fill many gaps around the park. Sussex lost a few more wickets which brought Joe Harrison to the crease and he lifted the score with a lot of quick singles and turning easy ones into well ran two's. he scored a very good 28 with several fours. A few overs after Harrison left the crease, sharks captain Andy D-W declared on 203 in 33 overs.

The Warks innings was started off by England internationals Nathan Foy and Freddy powers. Freddy fell shortly after the start of the innings hitting a ball straight to Joe Harrison at mid wicket - a very good catch i must say standing at the non-strikers end. The sharks skipper and many other players kept the game alive with some very good bowling changes, the pick of the bowlers for me was Joe Harrison bowling a beautiful spell off bowling picking up the key wicket of Nathan Foy. Wickets fell and this brought Sugg to the wicket, knowing that the game could have all three possibilities from here, Sugg took the attack to the sharks who were rattled by the 5foot 5 16 year old who hit Mark Burchell for 17 off one over. but yet Mark Burchell was to get his revenge with his next over Sugg dispatching a short leg-side ball to square leg, Burchell came around the wicket and had success straight away with Sugg attempting to play a sweep shot but gloved it to the ground where it trickles to the stumps. wickets fell after Sugg's departure which looked to be a sharks win was almost set up by Joe Harrison and his low action which took the Warks batting off track, the bears were forced to bat out the last 6 overs for the draw with Steve Wadsworth hitting an unbeaten 32. A very good game had by all and some good performances by many players, those off Andy D-W for his captaincy, Sugg for he 50 off just 37 balls and taking 3-35 off 8, Simon Ledwith for his quick-fire 52 at the start of the innings for the sharks and an impressive 28 for Joe Harrison who also took 3 wickets.
