Sussex Sharks V Warwickshire Bears BCEW League

Saturday 15th July 2006

by Ian Morris

Warks won the toss and elected to field.

Both sides started with first choice players unavailable, the warks side particularly short of sight fielding no less than 6 B1s (a record?).

Sussex started strongly and Si Ledwith promoted to replace the injured Dan Field, had the scoreboard rattling along with a quick fire 52. After his departure progress was more steady than spectacular. Miles Northwood (32) providing the backbone as partners chipped in with a few. Luke Sugg lead the Warks attack taking 3 for 33 and always looked dangerous. Griffiths (2 for 54 off 10) and Foy (1 for 44 off 8) were the other Warks bowlers of note.

Andy Dalby-Welsh declared the Sussex innings at 203 for 6 after 33, an aggressive declaration considering Warks made 170 odd off 14 against the Dragons last time out.

Englands Nathan Foy and Andy Powers opened the Warks innings, but Powers fell early to a shrp catch by Joe Harrison at midwicket. Harrison then bowled a blinding spell, claining the wickets of the dangerous Gav Griffiths caught and bowled, and cleaning up Mr Foy (32). The Warks boys then dug in and Luke Sugg (50) lead the resistance. When Turnham fell to complete Harrisons return of 3 for 12 off 5 it looked all up for Warks. A determined Steve Wadsworth (32*) refused to give up his wicket, and when David Gavrilovic cynically kicked away all 6 deliveries of the final over, Warks had clung on for the draw. Sussex 203/6 dec Warks 168/8.

Sussex 12 points Warks 11 points

Tonight Sussex sit top of BCEW league, rueing what might have been, 2 runs against Dragons and one wicket against Warks and there would be 2 in the win column rather than the 5 in drawn.
