Sussex Sharks V South Wales Dragons BCEW League

Report by Ian Morris

Sunday 14th May 2006

Wish Park, Hove

The return match after the epic season opener saw the Sharks and Dragons face each other at a sunny Wish Park in Sussex.

Miles Northwood, captaining the Sharks in the absence of Andy Dalby-Welsh, won the toss and offered the Dragons the chance to have a bat.

The Dragons innings moved along steadily, and at 24 overs they stood at 154 for 3, the fall of Howard Greenhill for 30 brought Damion Corrigan to join Toby Warren who had batted superbly, riding his luck at times, but compiling an innings of 139 n.o. including 17x4's and 4x6's. A display of power hitting from this pair saw Dragons add 109 in the last 6 overs, Damion finishing 51 no off 32 balls and Dragons 267 for 3.

Sussex reply never really got started, the Dragons bowling, pacy and accurate had Sussex on the back foot. Greenhill 3 for 24 and Corrigan 2 for 24 were the pick of the Dragons bowlers. Miles (18), Si Ledwith (13) amd Geoff Smith (10) the only Sussex batsmen to make double figures. But with the overs running out Marcus Ballinger grittily saw out the final few balls to secure the draw for Sussex.

A game where Sussex very definitely clung on for the draw, and with the BCEW league looking as if it will be a battle all the way with London’s resurgent result on Saturday, the points advantage that Dragons have gained may prove critical in the final reckoning.

Sussex 9 points, Dragons 13 points
