Galloways V Birmingham

Northern Galloways V Birmingham Sports, BBS League Division 1

Sunday June 4th 2006

Report by Dave Ellingham

On Sunday June 4th Northern Galloways hosted Birmingham Sports in the BBS cricket league, at Stockport Georgians Cricket Club. Birmingham won the toss and elected to field. Northern were soon in trouble with the loss of both openers O'Connor and Harrison. Gary Prescott batting at three played some very good shots and was the main contributor to the Northern innings. Gary was supported well by Frank McFarlane who hit two impressive boundaries. However Birmingham's attack was accurate and caused all the batsman trouble, supported by some fine catches and out-fielding Birmingham continually took wickets, bowling Northern out for 103 in 21 overs.

Birmingham went about their task of chasing down the runs in a no nonsense way, though both openers were removed before the score got to 30, Chris Dade and Kurt Butler shared in a 60 run partnership to ensure the Birmingham victory. Chris especially played a variety of aggressive shots through the leg side and was especially savage on anything short or over pitched. Kurt was stumped going for a cheeky run but by this time the result was never in doubt. Birmingham finished on 104 for 3 with Sarah scoring the winning runs in the 14th over.

A very impressive victory for Birmingham which puts them top of the BBS league. A big thanks must go to Stockport Georgians who provided an excellent facility for blind cricketers to play on. Birmingham collected 25 points for their victory and Northern 5. Lastly it was very pleasing to see 5 new players make their debut for Northern, and to see many players in the Birmingham team making only their second appearance in competitive blind cricket.
