Metro V London BCEW league Saturday 15th July 2006 Metro and London Sports met for the first time this season on a baking hot Saturday in Highgate Wood with Metro looking to take advantage of the meeting of early pace-setters Warwickshire and Sussex playing on the same day. Both teams contained notable absentees. For London, losing captain Chetan Davdra was a massive loss, as was Tim Guttridge’s unavailability for Metro in his come-back season. Stand-in London captain Charles Ronayne, won the toss and elected to field with London’s bowling looking much stronger than their batting, but the London bowlers were unable to make inroads as the opening Metro pair of Rob Kershaw and Rory Field made them toil, giving only one chance of note, Kershaw being dropped at mid-off, from the bowling of the unlucky Dan Miles. Having reached 112 at ten overs, Metro made that look sedate with 155 coming from the next nine as they accelerated attempting to declare whilst still leaving 40 overs for London to secure a draw or an unlikely victory. None of the London bowlers were really able to make their mark, although Rob McKenzie did pick up the wicket of Kershaw LBW with a lightning fast delivery. David Townley, however, proved just as able to keep the run rate rising, and together with Field, who remained unbeaten, the target they set of 268 was mammoth for a London team with 10 men. London were dealt a blow very early on in their reply when Ali Sadfter was removed in the first over, caught at point off the bowling of Heindrich Swanepoel. Metro looked hungry and eager in the field and London were unable to put up very much resistance, with only Dan Miles (12 overs) able to spend any time at the crease and with no players reaching double figures. Some good catching and steady if unspectacular bowling enabled Metro to wrap the London innings up quickly, aided by two unnecessary run-outs. London eventually fell for a paltry 30 runs to leave them with no bonus points and Metro full points, to help them keep pace with the league leaders. London, at the other end of the table, stay rooted to the bottom. |
