Metro V South Wales Dragons BCEW league Saturday 29th July 2006, Highgate Wood By Dave Townley Given the importance of this fixture to both clubs, it was always going to be tight, and hard fought. And so it turned out to be. Dragons got the better of the early exchanges. Winning the toss, putting Metro into bat first, and dismissing Adam Benjamin for 7 in Howard Greenhills, (1 for 15), second over. Damion Corrigan taking the catch, his first of four in the innings. Metro fought back with a fine second wicket partnership of 117 between Rory Field (51) and David Townley (64). This proved to be the mainstay of Metros innings, and following Townleys dismissal, Field put on a further 38 with Matt Dean (17). Once Dean had departed, Corrigan capped a fine day in the field by taking three wickets with the ball for 37 runs. The last of which was a caught and bowled to dismiss Rob Kershaw, who had scored a brisk 25. At this point Metro declared on 230 for 8 in the 33rd over. Andy Law (2-94) and Will Norman (1-54) were Dragons other wicket-takers. In reply Dragons also suffered an early blow when Neil Prior was given out to a fine catch by Amit Amin in the first over, bowled by Townley (1-22). Things could have got worse if Townley had clung on to a sharp chance given by Toby Warren in the second over, but it was Metro who suffered a setback in the third when Dave Powers pulled a hamstring while fielding at fine leg. Even though Powers struggled on behind the stumps on one leg, Metro were effectively down to ten men. That said, Warren played a superb innings, scoring 78 in fine style. He was ably supported by Dave Ellingham (3) and Corrigan (11), as Metro found the wickets they needed hard to come by. Corrigans dismissal was an excellent steepling catch by Dean at deep mid-off .
Metro were further reduced to nine men when Kershaw made an early exit in the 15th over, but Dragons, while not lookking like reaching the 231 target, comfortably saw off the Metro attack finishing on 173 for 4. Greenhill who hurried and scurried his way to 34, and Law with 14, were the not out bats men. Kershaw (1-14), Field (1-32), and Heindrich Swanepoel (1-33) were Metros other wicket-takers. Match drawn. |
