South Wales Dragons V Metro BCEW League at Newport Fugitives CC Report by Bradley Fisher Sunday 25th June 2006 As the anticipation mounted for England against Ecuador, two giants of VI cricket clashed in Newport. But the Dragons were without their giant, Damion. Dave 'Iceman' Townley won the toss and put the Dragons in on a sloping wicket. The bowling started off very tight, restricting Dragons to 41 off 10 overs. Keryn and the usually obdurate Steve Carpenter both fell cheaply. Toby Warren played a fine innings, with selective hitting and solid defence in the anchor role for the Dragons. He was joined by Dragons Captain, Howard Greenhill. The run rate began to increase with some horrific bowling from Fisher, capitalised on by the talented Warren and the unorthodox style of Greenhill, who utilised a reverse pull to great effect. Howard finally fell in the 40s, missing a sweep off Townley to be caught lbw straight in front. Soon after, Adam Benjamin removed the clearly disappointed Warren. Metro applied themselves well in the field, most notably a fine catch from Bryn Reynolds at point. The pick of the bowlers were Adam Benjamin with 5 wickets gained from McGrath-like accuracy, and superb length bowling from skipper, David Townley, who took the final wicket in the 40th over, Dutton edging a regulation catch to the keeper to restrict Dragons to 198 all out. With Metro's powerful batting lineup, David Townley set out to chase the ten an over target, putting the big hitters at the top of the order. Dragons have always had a good fielding team and proved so again. Rory Field was dismissed playing a wild shot, which caught the edge to be caught behind. Townley didn't hang around as he attempted to keep pushing the run rate. Swanepoel and Matt 'the Machine' Dean displayed their hitting ability pushing Metro to 9 an over despite tight bowling by the Dragons. Dean perished to a superb boundary catch by Warren. Heindrich soon went in similar fashion and the run rate slowed as the game shifted momentum towards the Dragons. Benjamin and Amit Amin staved off the snarling Dragons. Amin was dismissed but as Dave Powers walked into the gloom the rain began to put out the Dragons fire. Captains Greenhill and Townley agreed to the draw as the rain became torrential. The draw was a fair result, with both sides claiming 11 points to confirm the evenness of the contest. Well played to both sides. |
