Eastern Vipers win the Division 2 Title
The 2005 Division Two season was hard fought, exciting and early in the season it was also very controversial.
The early season mainly featured around Worcestershire Royals who had to get all of their games out of the way before the end of the school year as there team is mainly made up of players from New College Worcester.
The first weekend of games saw Worcester hold Warwickshire to a shock draw, the Royals never looked likely to reach Warwickshire's total batting second but held out for a hard fought draw. Warwickshire made 255 for 7 declared after 31 overs with Mike Harrison and Andy Powers both scoring 51. Worcester then managed an excellent team effort to bat the 29 overs out to score 130 for 9 despite excellent bowling figures of 5 for 25 by Warwickshire captain Gav Griffiths.
Worcester however had less luck in the other game of that first weekend suffering a defeat to Eastern Vipers.
Worcestershire then lost to Warwickshire as the Bears claimed revenge for being held to a draw the week before. Worcester scored 117 All Out with Luke Sugg 4 wickets, Gav Griffiths 3 wickets and Andy Powers 2 wickets doing the damage. Andy then struck a brutal 92 not out to guide Warwickshire to an 8 wicket victory with Sam Murray claiming both wickets for the Royals.
The Royals then batted second to hold out for a draw against Eastern Vipers.
Vipers then went on to host new boys Northants, Vipers scored a massive 367 for 2 with Ben Armitage managing a stunning 248 not out. Northants were left to bat for 32 overs to try and earn a draw and thanks to 75 from Ian Goodearl and Northants Captain David Gavrilovic who scored 24 from a marathon 27 over innings the new boys hung on for the draw despite 7 wickets from Vipers all rounder Chris Syrett.
Then came the two grudge matches between Worcester and Northants with Northants team containing several ex-Worcester players including 3 former Worcester captains. In the first game at Northampton Worcester were put in to bat and only managed a moderate score with Alastair Provan claiming 4 wickets and Dave Powers scoring 74 for the Royals. An excellent team performance saw Northants claim there first ever win in only there second ever league game by 5 wickets.
The next week in the return match Worcester scored just over 300 with Dave Powers 143 and Paul Powers 40 getting the Royals off to a lightning fast start. Elliot Stonhill claimed fantastic bowling figures of 4 for 18 from 8 overs for Northants. In Northants reply Ian Goodearl hammered 127 not out and shared a 5th wicket partnership with Elliot Stonhill of 137 to guide Northants to a draw in boiling hot conditions in Worcester.
Leeds played their first games of the season during early June with great success. They thrashed Worcester in Leeds, scoring over 350 with Shah Mia scoring 172. They then bowled Worcester out for just over 100 to claim a comprehensive win.
The return match in Worcester was much closer with both teams being bowled out for less than 200 and Leeds claimed a tight 12 run victory to end Worcester's already very slim title hopes.
It was about this point in the season that it was confirmed that Warwickshire had had around 40 points docked for breaking rules regarding the wearing of eye shades by b1 players in their two games against Worcester.
This left the Bears needing to win all of their remaining games to claim the title. One of the games of the season happened at the beginning of July when Northants hosted Warwickshire. Warwickshire won the toss and put Northants in to bat. Some excellent Bears bowling was rewarded with three early wickets, but then a century partnership from Ian Goodearl (72) and Charles Ronayne (29) gave Northants something to bowl at as they were bowled out for 166. It looked like Northants would pull off a stunning upset when Warwickshire were 60 for 4 with little batting to come but Luke Sugg 73 not out and Steve Wadsworth (about 30 not out) batted excellently and completed their own century partnership to steer the Bears to a crucial 6 wicket victory.
Warwickshire continued their charge by thrashing Leeds twice in one day putting Leeds in to bat both times, with Leeds scoring 36 and 83 to suffer a 10 wicket defeat and a 9 wicket defeat. Andy Powers took 6 wickets between the two games and finished both games by hitting huge sixes.
On the same day a vastly under strength Northants side were comfortably beaten by Eastern Vipers with Vipers claiming a 9 wicket win due mainly to 86 not out from Ben Armitage.
At this point Leeds had it turned out played their last game of the season conceding both of their scheduled games against Northants and also conceding both games against Eastern Vipers.
Northants finished their season with another heavy defeat this time by 8 wickets against Warwickshire. Northants could only score 117 due to excellent Bears bowling and a phenomenal catch from Andy Powers who almost knocked himself out diving to catch the ball over his head to remove Northants star batsman Ian Goodearl. Warwickshire cruised to the target with Gav Griffiths batting very well and hitting a number of excellent reverse sweeps.
So more than three months after the season started it all came down to the last day of the season, Eastern Vipers versus Warwickshire to decide which team would win the division two title.
Vipers were put into bat and reached 228 All Out from 31.2 overs with Chris Syrett starring with a magnificent 120. Warwickshire knew they had to win to have any hope of claiming the title but could only stumble to 177 All Out which meant Eastern Vipers had claimed the 2005 Division Two title.
