Northamptonshrie VIXINS V Worcestershire Royals BBS National Cricket League Division 2

Report from www.northantsblindcricket.com

A cloudy day saw the first game of Blind Cricket at Solihull Cricket Club on Sunday 13 August.

Northamptonshire VIXINS claimed a 5 wicket victory over Worcestershire in the clubs first ever home game and just second ever league match. Northants won the toss for the 5th time in a row and chose to field first in overcast conditions at Obelisk Cricket Club.
Northants claimed an early wicket when Alastair Provan held a low catch to remove Worcester opener Robin Williams for a duck off the bowling of David Gavrilovic. Worcester then made steady progress reaching 128 for 5 wickets at the end of the 19th over.
Some of the wickets to fall included a brilliant catch from Mark Simons and an even better caught and bowled by Ian Goodearl to remove Worcester captain Dave Keeling for a golden duck.
Then came the crucial wicket when Worcester's star batsman Dave Powers hit his own wicket off the bowling of David Gavrilovic and was out for an excellent 74.
Worcester dug in and held out for another 7 overs before another wicket fell and then lost the last 4 wickets in 4 overs. They only held out that long thanks to Joe Vickers with 17 runs and Simon Hill with 10 runs.
Elliot stonhill claimed fantastic bowling figures of 8 overs, 2 maidens, 4 wickets for 18 runs which were career best figures. David Gavrilovic and Alastair Provan took 2 wickets each with Ian Goodearl and a run out by Alastair Provan taking the other two wickets. Worcester finished 171 All Out after 31 overs leaving Northants 29 overs to score the runs needed for victory.
Things started badly when opener David Gavrilovic played an awful shot and was caught for 0. John Wood and Ian Goodearl then put on a 58 run partnership for the second wicket with John eventually falling for 25 runs.
Goodearl was then joined by Alastair Provan, both Ian and Alastair fell with the score on 110 Ian scoring 32 and Alastair 33. When Mark Higgins fell 2 overs later for 0 the score was 123 for 5 and with inexperienced batsmen from number 8 onwards Worcester sensed a chance of victory.
A fantastic partnership from Charles Ronayne and Elliot stonhill steered Northants to victory as they added an unbroken partnership of 49 to leave the score at 172 for 5 for a 5 wicket win with 23 balls to spare. Charles ended up 35 not out with Elliot 7 not out.
Northants Captain David Gavrilovic said "It was fantastic to get our first win so soon after joining the league, especially in such a grudge match with several of our team being former Worcester players."
Special mentions are deserved by Alan Kearsley and Glynn Radford for impressive debuts including some impressive fielding.
