Bears V VIXINS 10th July 2005

Northamptonshire VIXINS V Warwickshire Bears BBS National Cricket League Division 2

Report from the Official Northamptonshire VIXINS site

On a nice day at the Obelisk Cricket Ground, Northampton, the VIXINS faced the Bears for the first time in the league, having lost to them in both previous encounters in cup competitions. The Captain, Gavrilovic having won the toss elected to bat.

Northants, were again in trouble early on as they lost quick wickets at the start of the innings. The hosts were three down before even making fifty runs, with not a lot of run scoring potential further down the order.

The VIXINS most consistant player all season was on hand to steady the ship once again, however, as Ian Goodearl chipped in with the top score of 72. He was ably supported in a fourth wicket stand of over 100 with Charles Ronayne (29) as the VIXINS managed to put a respectable score on, and at the same time managed to bat out over thirty overs leaving the visitors with fewer overs to score the runs required than it looke like they may have had earlier in the innings.

Goodearl, however, was unable to last the full forty overs and once his wicket had been taken the VIXINS innings collapsed, none of the lower order being able to make it to double figures. Goodearl had, however, played his part and the Bears were left needing a tricky 167 off just twenty five overs.

The Bears innings started badly and the VIXINS looked like they may have been able to pull off a shock as they took four quick wickets early on in the innings, the highlight of which was an amazing run out with great teamwork from the Provan's. However the Bears found a hundred run partnership of their own between Sugg and Wadsworth, Sugg top scoring on 73 showing just why he is seen as one of the best young players in the game. That partnership saw the Bears through to a six wicket win, though the VIXINS could certainly take positives from their bowling performance.

One of the more intriguing parts of the season means that the three top bowlers, Stonhill, Gavrilovic and A Provan are all on the same number of wickets, in the test to see who can get the most during the season. That would, however, seem to be the biggest question left this season for the VIXINS whose chances of gaining promotion slimmed greatly with this defeat.
