Vipers V Sharks 11th June 2005

Eastern Vipers V Sussex Sharks BBS Primary Club Knockout Cup 2005 Quarter Final

Report by Ian Morris

On a rather overcast day at the University press ground in Cambridge, Vipers hosted the Sharks in the BBS Primary Club KO Quarter final. Sharks had been hit by illness and unavailability, and dipped into the squad to give debuts to Andy Burchell and the 11 year old “Dangerous” Declan Dexter. Another debutant, Colin White was taken ill on the morning of the game, all at Sussex wish him a speedy recovery.

Vipers won the toss and offered Sharks the opportunity to have a bat. Sharks started badly losing opener Si Ledwith for 0 to the pacy bowling of Chris Syrett. The Sussex innings progressed steadily, Joe Harrison starred with a sparkling 65 off just 61 deliveries including 5 boundries. After Joe departed the middle order chipped in, and a word for those unsung hero’s, the runners.

Si Ledwith and Dan Field kept the pressure on the Vipers field and their scampering antics pushed the Sharks total to a healthy 202/8 at the end of 30 overs.

The notable contributers for Vipers in the field, Darren Paddick with a very tidy display behind the stumps and 4 catches, Mark Banham 3 for 29 and Daz Cook who returned 6 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for 28 in the best display of pace B1 bowling the Sharks had ever faced.

The Vipers reply started very slowly, with Mark Burchell and Andy Dalby-Welsh tying the openers down, wickets were falling and the rate was climbing at a worrying rate.

Enter Chris Syrett.

In a majestic display of power hitting Chris hit 115 in just 43 balls, including 10 sixes and 8 fours, when he finally perished in the 17th over, to the 3rd fine catch from Harrison, Vipers stood at 164 for 6 requiring just 39 from 13 overs. It looked a formality.

However, the shell shocked Sussex attack were not ready to give in and began to put the squeeze on. A nervous run out and some very tight bowling saw Vipers needing 13 off the last 3, 2 wickets in hand.

ITS IN THE AIR!!!!!!, will it carry? No, it drops between mid on and square leg, and the despairing dive means they scamper through for 2 and there it is Vipers win by 1 wicket with just 3 balls to spare. Mentions must go out to Mark Burchell, 6 overs 3 maidens 3 wickets, 10 runs plus a run out with a direct hit, Joe Harrison for his 3 magnificent catches and a run out.

The day however, belonged to Chris Syrett and the Vipers, who progress to face the Dragons in the semi final, congratulations on a great game and best of luck for the rest of the season
