Royals V VIXINS 19th June 2005

Worcestershire Royals V Northamptonshire VIXINS BBS National Cricket League Division 2

Report from the Official Northamptonshire VIXINS site

On a boiling hot summer day Northants just ran out of time in their attempt to complete a double over Worcester following their 5 wicket victory the previous week.

In temperatures more suited to the desert than the cricket field Northants yet again won the toss and chose to field first.

For the third week in a row David Gavrilovic took the first wicket when Alastair Provan took an excellent catch to dismiss Worcester opener Paul Powers for a rapid 40. However the early wicket didn't check the incredible scoring rate that saw the first 50 runs come off just 16 balls and the first 100 from just 6 overs. Robin Williams and Dave Powers fell in close succession both to Alastair Provan with Dave out LBW for a brutal 143 runs from less than 100 balls. Robin survived for about 10 overs without scoring a run.

The rest of Worcester's inninngs was at a slower pace with only Nick Killan 28 and Dave Keeling 12 not out looking like scoring well although Joe Vickers also contributed a steady 14.

Alastair Provan ended with figures of 8 overs, 0 maidens, 4 wickets for 39 runs. David Gavrilovic with 2 wickets and Elliot Stonhill with 1 wicket took the other dismissals. John Wood took his first ever catch and Alastair Provan and Ian Goodearl took 2 catches each. Worcester eventually declared on 302 for 7 after 31 overs in the intense heat.

Northants reply started badly with John Wood and David Gavrilovic falling early for poor scores. Alastair Provan then blasted 46 quick runs before being trapped LBW. After Mark Higgins fell 2 balls later Northants were reeling on 97 for 4 with another 18 overs still to survive. Then Ian Goodearl took control.

Ian ended not out on 127 his first ever century in just his third ever league game. Elliot Stonhill finished 6 not out after sharing a new club record partnership of 137 unbroken with Ian. Northants ended up on 234 for 4 and were left feeling that with a few more than the 29 overs they had to bat they might have been able to secure the victory.

Northants captain David Gavrilovic said "I've never played cricket in such hot conditions, it was easily over 30 degrees out there and it was as hot at the end of the game as it was at the start. Of course we would have liked the victory but I was proud of the way we batted after fielding for 31 overs in that heat." A special mention also goes to Kev Pamphilon for an impressive debut performance for the club.

Northants now have 55 points from 3 league games and are still unbeaten in the league. Our next league game is on July 10th against Warwickshire at the Obelisk Centre in Northampton.
